I remember the days when green smoothies were just coming onto the health food scene and everyone was iffy about ’em. I’d take pictures of the ones I made in high school and people would ask me if I genuinely enjoyed drinking kale and spinach in my smoothies. I had the same answer then as I do now – if you put fruits, super foods and natural sweeteners into the mix, the greens completely disappear and it’s 100% enjoyable!
Whenever you’re making a smoothie with a hefty dose of greens, make sure to pair it with slightly sweeter fruits (apples or bananas) unless you are accustomed to the green flavor and don’t mind it like myself. Of course it all depends on the amount and the type of green. While I love swiss chard and kale, I only use them with I’m making smoothies with bananas so I know the sweetness will overpower the bitterness.
I posted this smoothie on my Instagram page last week but wanted to give you guys the full breakdown on my blog for ingredients and my new favorite greens.
For this gem of a drink I used Earthbound Farm Organic’s Herb Blend for my greens fix while throwing splashes of ginger and turmeric into my blender for that anti-inflammatory and detoxifying aid. The herb blend is a mixture of butter lettuce, romaine, arugula, spinach and a few other mild greens. I find myself going back again and again to my store to purchase this blend just because it is so versatile in so many recipes.
The rest of the smoothie involves a lot of citrus and a whooole lot of coconut milk. Because really what’s better than putting coconut into a smoothie? Nothing! I also like to switch it up from the usual almond milk 99% of America uses.
- 1 cup unsweetened coconut milk
- ½ cup frozen mango
- ½ frozen banana
- 1 clementine
- 1 tsp ground turmeric
- 1 tsp ground ginger
- 1 tsp vanilla
- ½ ice
- 1 cup Earthbound Farm's Organic Herb Mix
- Combine all ingredients into a high speed blender.
- Blend well for about a minute, pour into two glasses and enjoy!
I love this smoothie because it isn’t as sweet as most of the ones I usually drink. I think we can all equally agree that thick banana blueberry smoothies piled high that you can spoon are all the rage right now but every now and then, you need one that is more detoxifying and green than just a sweet treat.
This smoothie has me officially hooked on clementines now (I mean, who isn’t?) and is the perfect mid-day snack this spring.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
