Cherry Chocolate Cold Brewed Smoothie

July _ 16

Breakfast, Recipes, Snacks

There was a time in my life when I gave up coffee. Not too long ago actually. I lasted for about six weeks and then one day I thought to myself, “damn, I could really use a latte”. The fact that I started working at Whole Foods with a coffee bar right by the entrance didn’t help my situation much either. But to be honest, since I went back onto the coffee grind this summer, I have learned how to drink it in moderation and even go a few days without it… on occasion.

But then one day after a workout, I decided to make this coffee smoothie and the game changed completely. If you’ve never tried adding frozen fruit and coffee into your blender and mixing that bad boy up, I recommend you take this recipe and get the ball rolling.

Not only does frozen fruit add that creamy texture to the coffee but it also makes it acceptable to have a filling breakfast or post-workout snack that provides you with some sort of nourishment and doesn’t leave you with complete jitters.

We all know when we suck up our coffee too fast and feel WIRED. Yup, no worries friends! That doesn’t happen with this smoothie down below.

I’ve been making this so much it’s kind of ridiculous. I love using Califia Farms’ Unsweetened Black & White Cold Brew Coffee for this smoothie because it’s a mix of coconut cream, almond milk and cold brewed coffee. Pretty much all of my favorite things in one drink. Best part? No added sugar! Thank yooooou, Califia, for finally giving me my dream drink.

My Whole Foods keeps it right next to the express lane so every. single. time I check out I’ve got my eye on it. That can be my excuse to making this 24-7.

To give it a chocolate essence, I have a few options for ya. I love adding cacao powder OR using a plant-based chocolate protein powder. When I don’t necessarily need protein powder in the middle of the day when I have my coffee, I always do a 1/4 or 1/2 a scoop but if it’s cacao powder, toss in at least 3 tablespoons worth to get that rich chocolate taste.

This is a smoothie I love having on my way to work because it isn’t a full meal but it’s a good snack before I take on a huge shift and it’s not just coffee. Sometimes I find myself grabbing a latte at Allegro a few minutes leading up to my shift and then an hour in I’m buzzing off the walls and can hardly breathe.

That’s the good thing about cold brew – it gives me that slow release of energy, has low acidity so it doesn’t give me horrid acid reflux. I think cold brew and I are a match made in heaven. Especially when it involves a smoothie.

Now run to the store, grab your cherries and get blending.

You can thank me later for how your tastebuds will be on cloud 9 after slurping this up!
