By following over 1,000 foodies on social media, I always feel the need to keep up to date with the latest trends. At first it was hopping on the band wagon of different granola, then onto yogurt… now I’m all about dairy-free ice cream!
When I started to search for dairy-free alternatives, the one with the largest array of options in the frozen desserts aisle was So Delicious. I started following So Delicious about a year ago when I noticed they sold dairy-free yogurts, especially greek style ones. When I tried the almond milk ones, I wasn’t a fan. However, the coconut milk ones were always excellent and perfectly reminiscent of regular dairy yogurt in my overnight oats. I finally got my hands on a few of the frozen desserts beginning with their coconut milk pomegranate chip, green tea and cookie dough flavors. Not only is the coconut milk line soy and dairy-free, it also contains no GMOs and is organic (aside from being kosher and 100% vegan). What’s not to love?
After diving face first into the coconut milk desserts, I tried the best yet: the almond milk butter pecan. I truly was in heaven. In my opinion, nothing tasted creamier and more like dairy ice cream than this butter pecan flavor – until I tried the cashew milk pint.
So Delicious came out with their newest line of ice cream flavors a few weeks ago and once I started seeing some of my followers receiving them and raving about how tasty they were, I immediately took my butt over to Whole Foods to see if they existed. After waiting just a bit, I finally saw these beauties lining the freezer aisle including five different flavors. The flavors include creamy cashew, snickerdoodle, dark chocolate truffle, cappuccino and salted caramel cluster. Between the snickerdoodle, cappuccino and creamy cashew I had a hard time picking up the right pick for me but I ended up with the creamy cashew.
Oh. My. Gosh. My only words to describe how rich, creamy and decadent this treat was. I could hardly wait to taste it waiting in the check out line which resulted in me grabbing a spoon from the cashier and opening it right as I walked out the door.
What I love so much about this cashew milk line is the clear ingredient list, rich flavor and the smooth texture. Just in the creamy cashew, there are only 6 ingredients (two of which are thickeners). The vanilla extract is so well defined in this flavor that it will remind you of the fanciest, high quality vanilla bean ice cream you could ever purchase. But oh wait, don’t forget it’s dairy-free!
You can feel good about eating this ice cream (somewhat) knowing the fat is from the cashew milk alone. Cashews are an excellent source of vitamins and minerals, especially magnesium. They have a high antioxidant level which helps prevent cardiovascular diseases and they are one of the many nuts that has a lower fat content. Sounds like a good time to me!
Although this ice cream is phenomenal straight out of the pint (you will have an extremely difficult time only eating 1/4th of it at a time), I decided to mix and blend it a few different ways.
My first recommendation is to whip this up in somewhat of a soft-serve consistency by adding a dash of milk to blend, a few frozen (or fresh) strawberries and cocoa powder to your blender. It will almost turn out like banana “ice cream” but with a thicker and more decadent flavor over one made with bananas.
Of course after blending mine I had to top it with Purely Elizabeth granola, the only way to properly top anything fruit based.
My second recommendation is to serve this with some homemade cookies or raw energy bites (a blend of dates/nuts). My roommate had made some almond butter dark chocolate chip oatmeal cookies a few weeks back that were hanging out in the back of our freezer so I took the chance to eat ’em up by smashing some over a few spoonfuls of the ice cream.
Mind blown. Mouth happy. Everything was perfect.
With so many ways to eat So Delicious’ non-dairy desserts you really can do no wrong. For around $6 a pint, you may think it is pricey but with such variety and depth of flavors, So Delicious nails it every single time. You won’t be unsatisfied when you pop the first spoonful into your mouth, trust me!
